Starting project for Days for Girls today I went to
Joann Fabrics today to get material to make liners. After watching video on how
to do them it seemed pretty straight forward and now my goal is to see if I can
get them to donate the material. After speaking to the manager about this
program she agreed to match every yard of material with a free yard. She also
supplied me with a couple of spools of thread for over-lock machines which I
took even though that is not the type of machine I have. I am certain that
Jessica’s group can use the thread.
I also contacted the
warehouse director at Medline Industries which is a medical supply facility. I
was on a search for wash cloths and underwear. While they didn’t have any
underwear they did have wash cloths that were being discontinued from their
supplies. I was able to get them to donate 1200 wash cloths for this project
which I thought was amazing. 1200 wash cloths will help so many girls that I
couldn’t even begin to express my thanks. He didn’t want anything except to
help, it was amazing.
Through this class and
this project we are discovering that girls and their menstrual cycles are a
Taboo topic. They are treated in a way that they are keep out of school and
away from the general public. They have no hygiene products and no water to
take care of their needs. They are treated as worthless people with little to
no value. In this life of poverty and lack of education they are unable to
better their life in any way.
I find this a worth wild
project that will help girls stay in school and hopefully remove themselves
from a life of poverty.
